20 Best Movies Of 2018 (So Far)

7. The Tale

The Tale Laura Dern
Untitled Entertainment

Laura Dern gives perhaps the best performance of her career - and one that'd surely be Oscar-worthy if the movie didn't forego a theatrical release in favour of a TV premiere - in Jennifer Fox's autobiographical drama focused on the sexual abuse she suffered as a child, and her discovery of such as an adult.

Dern and young Isabelle NĂ©lisse are fantastic as the adult and teenage versions of Fox respectively, in a heartbreaking and oft-unpleasant yet exceptionally nuanced examination of the scars left by such abuse.

Skirting around simplistic, easily digestible characterisation and psychology in favour of something more raw and real, The Tale is an uncommonly shattering drama, though recommended only to those with strong minds and stomachs.
