John Krasinski proves himself a natural at taut, highly unnerving genre directing with this tightly-wound suspense thriller that ultimately amounts to far more than its no-sound gimmick.

Beautifully acted by the central family - especially a splendidly frazzled Emily Blunt - A Quiet Place succeeds as both a rousing family survival drama and an intense thriller caper.

Clocking in at just 90 minutes, it's an exercise in refreshing filmmaking economy, wasting not a moment of screen time while serving up consistent shocks and surprises from its devastating first scene until its chest-thumping final one.

As long as you can get on-board with the movie's somewhat silly central conceit - that anyone would dare get pregnant in the middle of an alien invasion - there are rewards a-plenty here for genre fans.
