And the #1 spot goes to Ari Aster's mind-blowing directorial debut, a horror movie that deftly melds almost impossibly upsetting family turmoil with more conventional horror elements to stunning effect.

Best watched knowing as little as possible, Hereditary smartly upends expectations throughout, keeping the viewer in a near-constant state of stress and unease for 127 agonising minutes.

Toni Collette gives the performance of her career as a bereaved daughter staring down a supernatural presence in her home, while co-stars Gabriel Byrne, Molly Shapiro, Alex Wolff and Ann Dowd provide exceptional support.

Further elevated by beautiful cinematography and Colin Stetson's intense score, Hereditary is a rarest of horrors that'll leave both your nerves rattled and your tear ducts ready to overflow.

Quite possibly the best film of its kind in years, and the high bar for every other movie this year to beat. A masterpiece.
