10. Mandy
All it took for Nicolas Cage to reach peak Nicolas Cage was a collaboration with visionary art-house filmmaker Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow).
Mandy is braced perfectly between slow, atmospheric experimental cinema and grindhouse schlock, producing a fiercely unique, bats*** crazy hybrid of the two that's quite unlike nothing else released this year.
Cage gives a masterful performance as Red Miller, a vengeful soul out to wreak bloody payback on an acid-addled biker gang.
Though the first half is a slow-burn - perhaps too slow for some, in fact - the final hour is a glorious, gorgeous car crash of brutal violence, cartoonish action and Cage dialling it up to 11.
There's even a killer score from the late Jóhann Jóhannsson in the bargain and an awesome cameo from Predator's Mac himself, Bill Duke, if that's your thing. If you're a fan of Cage's or of bold, go-for-broke filmmaking, Mandy is a must-see.
