9. Annihilation

Alex Garland's sci-fi horror film established itself as an instant cult classic with its ambitious, left-field approach to the genre, its terrific ensemble composed primarily of women - led by a wonderful Natalie Portman - and its unforgettable, eyeball-melting third act.

Deliberate yet never slow, Annihilation maintains a consistent sense of unease over its two hours, refusing to spoon-feed exposition to viewers or signposting what it all means. There's a lot here to unpack and interpret, and it's sure to keep genre fans talking for years, if not longer.

Though it's a shame most of us weren't able to watch it on the big screen, Annihilation is unquestionably one of Netflix's strongest acquisitions to date.
