Who ever expected Jim from The Office to pull off this?

John Krasinski's new mostly-mute horror film is a terrifically intense, emotionally devastating and nerve-wracking genre effort that's so much more than its sound-less hook might suggest.

Krasinski and Emily Blunt give spectacular performances as parents attempting to keep their family alive during an alien invasion, and as long as you can deal with an implausible central plot point, this is a tenaciously lean, nerve-shredding piece of work.

It's not a minute too long, the various suspense set-pieces are masterfully executed, and as an audio-visual showcase, it's one of the most technically crisp lower-budget genre films of the year.
