What a surprise - Midsommar is not what you probably thought it was going to be. As a follow-up to Ari Aster's Hereditary, audiences could have reasonably expected another freaky, terrifying horror. In fact, that's pretty much how it was marketed.

And yes, it does start pretty horrifyingly and there ARE some haunting, intense sequences, but Midsommar is ostensibly a comedy. Or it wants you to explore the idea of what comedy can be, as it sets up the absurdity of the Wicker Man-like cult (which is beyond ridiculous when you think about it) and then makes you laugh to make the scary bits all the more jarring.

It's complex and rather wears its "anti-normalcy" badge on its sleeve, but it's different and in this world of blockbuster-led homogeny, that's no bad thing.
