Who would have thought that the origin movie that nobody wanted (mostly because of Heath Ledger's previously definitive take on the character introducing a lack of an origin as the origin) would end up almost being the film of the year?
While it might have been somewhat overshadowed by Martin Scorsese's Marvel musings, Todd Phillips' rumination on society's responsibility to its weakest parts was exhilarating, haunting and dark. And it hinged on a performance by Joaquin Phoenix that was just astounding.
There are huge and often dangerous ideas explored in there and this is a very important film on top of being an incredibly entertaining one. It's difficult to watch too and the way that it plays with the ideas of perception and reality so much is genius.
