3. Nomadland
ChloƩ Zhao catapults herself to the directing A-list with this graceful, free-flowing drama about a middle-aged woman, Fern (Frances McDormand), who sets off on a nomadic journey across the American West.
McDormand perhaps tops her most celebrated prior performances with a superbly restrained turn which leaves much of the storytelling and character development on her face, rather than resorting to prosaic exposition.
But matching McDormand is an incredible cast, with many of the film's actors - most memorably, Linda May, Charlene Swankie, and Bob Wells - being real-life nomads Zhao recruited during production.
This is a deeply lived-in film which says a lot about modern America both good and bad, while serving as a tribute to one woman's courageous fight to keep moving forward.
