20 Best Movies Of 2020

4. Never Rarely Sometimes Always

I'm Thinking of Ending Things
Focus Features

In a just world, Eliza Hittman's drama Never Rarely Sometimes Always would be a major awards contender right now, but it's also a film unmistakably disadvantaged by its difficult subject matter.

Sidney Flanigan plays Autumn, a 17-year-old girl forced to venture out of state to New York City to get an abortion without her parents' consent.

Hittman's film is a deeply compassionate film about the problems with abortion access in America, and the walls thrown up to shame and otherwise dissuade vulnerable young women from seeking terminations.

In her debut performance, Flanigan is simply astonishing even if her work will surely prove too slight for the Academy's tastes. You'll need to be in the mood for this one, but it's one of the most important films of the year.
