20 Best Movies Of 2022 (So Far)

11. Turning Red

Everything Everywhere All at Once Michelle Yeoh
Pixar

If Turning Red doesn't quite rank among Pixar's very best efforts, it's still another strong offering from Disney's premiere animated stable, melding eye-popping animation with some agreeably forward-thinking themes.

Enough time has passed that early 2000s nostalgia is now a thing - do you feel old yet? - and Turning Red has great fun mining that time period for every drop of comedy it's worth.

And while its notions of self-actualisation will seem familiar enough to anyone who's seen more than a few Disney movies, the script's exploration of more fringe subject matter - namely menstruation and teenage sexuality - confirms that Pixar is continuing to grow and mature.

Ignore the very silly controversies surrounding the movie and this is easily the year's most robust animated film to date.
