20 Best Movies Of 2022

3. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio

Though we've certainly had our fill of Pinocchio movies in recent years, trust Guillermo del Toro to deliver by far the best of the bunch.

Mere months after Robert Zemeckis' soulless live-action version failed to make a dent with audiences, del Toro's mesmerising stop-motion take is a true original like no other.

Ingeniously shifting the setting to Fascist Italy between the World Wars, del Toro and co-director Mark Gustafson have found a totally unique throughline with which to tell a deeply affecting tale about loss, love, and family.

Filled with daring revisions to the original story both narratively and aesthetically, this is one of the boldest animated films in many years, and while the context may be too strong for the very youngest children, it is a tale that toes the tonal line extremely well.

In a just world it'd also end up nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, but it's sadly looking unlikely. If Oscar voters pay attention, though, they'll hand it the easy win over Pixar for Best Animated Film.
