12. The Fabelmans

Top Gun Maverick Everything Everywhere All At Once Banshees of Inisherin
Universal

It would've been easy for Steven Spielberg's quasi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans to feel like a toe-curling exercise in self-indulgent filmmaker narcissism, but let's be honest - he's just too damn good for that.

Even removed from its based-on-a-true-story origins, Spielberg's latest is another affecting and at times surprising drama about both family and filmmaking - and what subjects has Spielberg proven himself more adept at exploring throughout his storied career?

The entire ensemble cast absolutely crushes it here, especially Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Judd Hirsch, and relative newcomer Gabriel LaBelle as protagonist Sammy. That's without mentioning an incredible cameo from a certain legendary filmmaker that's best not spoiled.

Working with a heartfelt script and lifted by gorgeous cinematography from Janusz KamiƄski - culminating in one of the best final shots of the entire year - The Fabelmans takes a deceptively straight-forward framework and wrings something quite profound out of it.
