19. Sister Act
There is so much to like about this hilarious fish out of water comedy that it is easy to forgive the movie's corny excesses. The first act introduces us to the world of lounge singer Deloris Wilson, a role Whoopi Goldberg was born to play, and the mob world she finds herself embedded in. After witnessing a murder, Deloris finds herself in protective custody, begrudgingly hiding out in a conservative convent.
While this premise in itself serves up some nice comic moments, it is the ingenious premise to have Deloris take over the worst sounding choir in history that elevates this film to great heights. The battle of wills between the Mother Superior and Deloris becomes the centrepiece for the film, Maggie Smith nailing every scene alongside Goldberg.
The hilarity though is in the songs, Deloris turning stale old hymns into song and dance numbers that even the Pope enjoys. From 'Oh Maria' to 'My God', each number is funny in its own right, the screenwriters thankfully realising this was the central strong idea to base the film around.
The final act is super cheesy, but Whoopi Goldberg is so much fun to be around you just can't help but enjoy the ride. It is also here where Smith's Mother Superior steals the show, her transition from grumpy traditionalist to stoic leader complete. She also has some great comic moments, in particular when she asks the Nuns attending Reno to 'try and blend in'. Gold!
