This 2017 film could not have come at a better time for Pixar, which found itself for the first time in a creative rut. The fact that the four movies either side of this gem were sequels says a lot about the drought of good ideas the studio was having.
The choice to base a film in Mexico and specifically around a young boy who is trapped in the afterlife, risky choice, something Pixar made a lot of in their heyday. Our protagonist is Young Manuel, who dreams of emulating his late great-great grandfather's career as a musician. He soon finds himself visiting his long dead relatives after a mishap during the Day of the Dead celebrations.
The film expertly explores deeper philosophical questions regarding the meaning of life while never being anything but charming. Potentially scary scenes involving walking skeletons are instead consistently hilarious, making the movie genuinely entertaining for all age groups. A running joke around the women of Manuel's family despising all musicians because of the great-great grandfather leaving the family is both hilarious while also setting the foundation for the key themes of the movie.
The finale is equal parts heartwarming and hilarious, Benjamin Bratt stealing the show voicing evil musician Ernesto de la Cruz, whose methods of death are a real bone tickler. The message that we should always remember those who came before us is a great one, the film successfully managing to make the topic of death one heck of a fun time.
