1. The Avengers
The original MCU blockbuster that changed everything we thought possible in a movie is a deserving top pick here. The idea of having an action film based on a team of six lead worthy heroes starring in the same movie in a film that wasn't a convoluted mess seemed impossible. But thanks to the patience and planning of Keven Fiege, the first all star outing in the MCU universe was allowed to flourish.
With all the characters already established in previous adventures, Josh Whedon is allowed to have fun playing with the character dynamics. The verbal battles between the righteous Captain America and Tony Stark are a highlight, as is any meeting between the villainous Loki and each of The Avengers.
Whedon pulls his best trick by having no defined leader, which allows each character the ability to breath, while also displaying the Avengers as a rudderless mess. The film doesn't rush into making them best friends too quickly, making their coming together in the astonishing final battle all the more rewarding.
The acting is all first rate, Downey Jr.'s ability to switch effortlessly from comedic moments to anger to detective earning him the best actor gong. Tom Hiddleston once more nails the role as Loki, making the Asgardian God looking to take over the world a far more three dimensional character than he deserves to be.
The highlight though is Hulk, who finally shines thanks to not having to anchor the movie. Be it smashing up the Jitari, Loki or Thor, every moment with the green beast is a delight.
