6. Scream 2 (Courtney Cox)

Horror movie sequels don't exactly have the strongest reputation, and even with the winning self-awareness of Wes Craven's original Scream, there was no guarantee he'd be able to make lightning strike twice.

And yet Scream 2, released less than a year after the first, is very nearly as great as its genre-smashing predecessor, offering up more pithy insight into Hollywood and the nature of sequels themselves, while amping up the creativity of the gnarly kills.

The film strikes a near-perfect balance of fan service, humour, and genuine suspense, and much like the first movie, the three leads - Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette - are absolutely fantastic.

Sadly Scream 3 ended up devolving into the very nonsense these films were critiquing in the first place, though the fourth and final film (to date, anyway) thankfully clawed things back, a few short years before Craven sadly passed away in 2015.
