If certainly the least of director Mike Flanagan's Netflix horror offerings to date, Before I Wake is an ambitious and imaginative fantasy-horror, following a couple (Thomas Jane and Kate Bosworth) who adopt a boy (Jacob Tremblay) with the ability to manifests his dreams and nightmares in reality.

Flanagan has a real penchant for mining absolute humanity out of even the broadest genre concept, and while the script is a little uneven, the performances from the cast nevertheless keep it dramatically afloat.

Though it's frustratingly clear that the low budget can't quite support Flanagan's ideas - evidenced by the abundantly underwhelming CGI - the emotional story and well-drawn characters ensure this is well worth checking out.
