If you can forget the relentless comparisons to A Quiet Place - despite Josh Malerman's source novel being written way back in 2014 - this post-apocalyptic horror boasts a uniquely offputting premise, sold with absolute, terrified sincerity by Sandra Bullock.

If Susanne Bier doesn't quite make the bone-chilling most of a world where supernatural creatures will force anyone who looks them in the eye to commit suicide, she nevertheless creates a convincing picture of societal decay, aided by a cracking supporting cast, including John Malkovich, Jacki Weaver, Sarah Paulson, Tom Hollander, and Trevante Rhodes.

Though it feels a bit too safe and conventional at times, it undeniably struck a chord with the mainstream.
