Apostle Dan Stevens

The Raid's Gareth Evans switched gears into the horror genre with this period chiller in which a man (Dan Stevens) travels to a remote Welsh island in order to rescue his sister who has been kidnapped by a cult.

Far more than just Evans' riff on The Wicker Man, Apostle is driven at all times by its imposing mood, largely thanks to Matt Flannery's eerie cinematography and a pulse-raising score from Fajar Yusekemal and Aria Prayogi.

Dan Stevens once again proves himself a capable leading man on the verge of truly breaking out, while Michael Sheen is fantastic as the enigmatic cult leader and Mark Lewis Jones nearly steals the show as the tyrannical zealot Quinn.

While far from the relentless thrills of Evans' martial arts movies, Apostle takes viewers on a slow-burn journey before letting loose with some repulsively brutal violence and a satisfyingly insane finale.
