And while Roma might be the Oscar darling, our #1 pick goes to Alex Garland's entrancing sci-fi horror Annihilation.

Despite pre-release murmurs suggesting that the movie was a bit of a mess - hence Paramount selling it to Netflix in the first place - Garland's daring genre spectacle was a staggering win for the streaming giant.

A wonderful cast of talented actresses, led by a never-better Natalie Portman, made good on Garland's ambitious, moody and ferociously smart slow-burn sci-fi.

It's a movie best watched without knowing much at all, honestly, and from the unnerving unease pervading throughout to its mind-blowing finale, Annihilation is exactly the sort of bold, endlessly creative work to serve as an emblem of Netflix Originals at their very best.
