11. The Irishman (2019)

Uncut Gems
Netflix

Martin Scorsese's most recent crime-drama is a long, winding tale of murder, betrayal and memory. Robert De Niro stars as Frank Sheehan, a mafia hitman who briefly aligned himself with Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino) and may have had something to do with the union leader's infamous and unsolved disappearance.

Despite its distracting de-ageing effects and intimidating runtime, The Irishman has all the hallmarks of a Scorsese project. It has shocking violence, retired criminals coming to terms with their villainous pasts, and unforgettable performances from De Niro, Pacino, Joe Pesci and Stephen Graham.

Even with the criticisms some people have with the film, there can be no denying The Irishman is a staggering achievement in storytelling, creating a multi-layered character study as only Scorsese can.

Besides, when a filmmaker is able to get Pesci to come out of retirement just to do a film with them, it's worth checking out.
