20 Best Netflix Original Movies

1. Roma (2018)

Netflix

Five years after the success of Gravity (2013), director Alfonso Cuaron turned to Netflix for his next film. Roma is not only the best film of Cuaron's career, but the best Netflix original the company has ever produced.

A semi-autobiographical drama about a live-in housekeeper (Yalitza Aparicio) who forms a bond with a middle-class family in 1970s Mexico, Roma is Cuaron's most personal and emotional daring film to date. It pulls no punches with its depiction of family life or childhood, and the fact it lost out on the Best Picture gong at the Oscars surely deserves to go down as one of the biggest snubs in the Academy's history.

Outside of the affecting performances and powerful themes, the true star of the film is Cuaron himself, who serves as the movie's cinematographer and uses the role to create some of modern cinema's most unforgettable and beautiful shots.

As of this writing, Roma is the best film in Netflix's ever-growing back catalogue, and will be a tough one to beat.
