15. The Crow (1994)
Dimension FilmsBased on James O'Barr's 1989 comic book, the feature-length adaptation of The Crow will live on in infamy due to the accidental on-set death of star Brandon Lee. While that tragic accident is what many people remember most about the movie, The Crow remains a visually stunning genre flick anchored by a charismatic lead performance. The clunky dialogue, plot and characterization are more than a little under-wrought, but director Alex Proyas' darkly Gothic vision and some gorgeous cinematography provide the style that covers for a lack of substance. Lee's martial arts prowess fuel the fast-paced action, while the movie retains a romantic core despite the trappings of both the comic book genre and the revenge-fuelled noir. The Crow would have surely been a breakthrough role for Brandon Lee, but as it stands the movie remains a fitting epitaph to a promising talent taken in the most unfortunate of circumstances.
