3. Isabelle Adjani - Possession (1981)

Midsommar Ending Dani Smile

Cult classic gem Possession received a so-so reception upon its initial release, but over the years the appreciation for Andrzej Żuławski's frightening vision has only grown louder and more positive.

The psychological drama is, in its simplest form, the tale of a deteriorating marriage and its troubling effects on wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani). It's a very disturbing but highly symbolic and challenging movie, which shifts between its human melodrama and shocking scenes of violence without fault.

In the lead role, Adjani is nothing short of a revelation, gamely taking viewers on a journey of self-destruction, emotional and physical deterioration, and anguish.

She'd make this list for the subway possession scene alone, but luckily there's more to Adjani's performance than the film's most infamously grotesque sequence. Anna is played as innocent and delicate, but also frightening and unpredictable, and watching Adjani act her heart out makes it all the more tragic the film was banned for so long after it came out.
