20 Best Performances In MCU History (So Far)

14. Mark Ruffalo - Bruce Banner/Hulk

The Avengers Bruce Banner Mark Ruffalo
Marvel/Paramount

Being one of the most acclaimed actors ever drafted into the MCU, Mark Ruffalo was guaranteed to bring his A-game as Bruce Banner, even if he was awkwardly brought in to replace Ed Norton.

Playing Banner as a calm and compassionate doctor who's seemingly mastered the art of keeping the Hulk at bay whilst he does all he can to help people, Ruffalo's performance early in the franchise is a striking masterclass of contrasts and subtly, constantly hinting at a monster underneath his unintimidating appearance.

He may lose some points for his weirdly loud and off-putting turn in Infinity War and uncharacteristic mannerisms in Endgame, but his work in Avengers, Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok speak for themselves.

Few characters in the MCU have gone through as stunning a physical transformation as Banner, and at his best Ruffalo sold every step of his troubled journey and conflicting personalities with heart and soul to spare.
