And of course, was anything else ever going to take the #1 spot? Heath Ledger dominated the Best Supporting Actor awards circuit with his phenomenal, unforgettable performance as The Joker, and rightly so.

Though Ledger's screen time is actually fairly minimal, he lingers around the edges of the frame even when he's not physically on-screen, due to the haunting, eerie nature of his unpredictable turn.

Would Ledger have won the Oscar if he had lived to see the ceremony? Who can say? Award or not, his grungy, expectation-defying work here became an instant masterclass in supervillain performance, and has yet to be matched a decade later.

Best Moment: So many to choose from, but the iconic interrogation scene, where he basically has Batman over a psychological barrel, has to be it. "You have nothing, nothing to threaten me with! Nothing to do with all your strength!" Incredible.
