20 Best Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century

19. Coherence

Ugly Duckling Films

Let's just say, straight off the bat, that Schrodinger's Cat, as a plot device or a way of explaining something has overstayed its welcome. Its become a sci-fi trope that elicits an audible groan from most people. Luckily, Coherence predates that overuse, so it gets a pass.

Coherence is light sci-fi for sure, but it will absolutely melt your brain. Set, for the most part, in a single room, the film follows a group of friends during a dinner party as a comet passes above. It's difficult to say anything else without giving anything away. All we'll say is that strange occurrences begin taking place and if you happen to have an interest in the multiverse then this is for you.

The movie also poses you the question of, assuming there are infinite versions of you in infinite universes, what if you are in fact the worst possible version of you? And if you had the chance, would you take the opportunity to change that?

Coherence isn't just a brilliant sci-fi film, but a tense and wonderfully structured thriller that achieves so much with the sparse tools it has at its disposal.
