20 Best Sci-Fi Horror Movies Of The 21st Century

1. A Quiet Place

Sound in horror movies is certainly one of the more crucial aspects, from the stab of strings for jump scares to the bombastic climactic battle scenes.

So when Office alumni-cum-director John Krasinki dropped on us a film mostly devoid of sound, we weren't sure what to expect.

Alright, slight exaggeration there. It's not mostly devoid of sound, yet it uses the principal of minimalism as a means of conveying the feeling of hiding from an aggressor that is drawn to noise.

So begins a tale of a family trying to survive and scavenge whilst not attracting any attention to themselves. Whilst that sounds boring, it actually creates one of the tensest films out there.

You find yourself subconsciously holding your breath as much as the starring cast do, as this grown up version of Tremors puts them through the absolute wringer at times.

A Quiet Place stands out for turning the audio cliches of the genre upside down, instead relying on the absence of sound to make for much more intense moments.

Especially that nail bit. That'll haunt me for a long time.
