20 Best Sci-Fi Horror Movies Of The 21st Century

2. The Invisible Man (2020)

Invisible Man
Universal Pictures

The story of the invisible man has been doing the rounds since the late 19th century, portrayed many a time on silver screen and novel form.

So when a new version was being announced for this year, many were expecting a rehash of the old classic.

Instead, we got a fresh new take on the unseen entity from Saw creator Leigh Whannell. All bets were off, with Whannell's Saw franchise now a sad parody after countless sequels lost its focus.

Veterans of the story may have tried predicting events, especially with a character named Griffin working in the field of optics, but it's fair to say expectations were somewhat subverted.

Elizabeth Moss carries it as the survivor of an abusive relationship, before events unfold that frame her as a mentally unstable aggressor. To spoil wouldn't be fair, but think less Hollow Man and more personalised revenge story, and you're on the right page.

But the greatest bit is not knowing whose revenge it is. Is Moss' Cecilia unable to move on and unfairly targeting Griffin, or are there larger events at play than the two of them...?
