20 Best Selling Blu-Rays Of All Time

1. Avatar

Total Copies Sold: 7,112,816 Any of you out there expecting a surprise top entrant are going to be disappointed; of course it was going to be Avatar. A film so phenomenally successful is convinced a whole industry to invest millions in a gimmick, James Cameron's sci-fi, romance, action epic will no doubt sit atop these sort of lists for years to come; what else can come close? With the film barely out of cinemas by the time its initial home video release came along, it's no surprise with the exposure it had that the sales would be so impressive - most of its sales came in the first year. Avatar didn't get here just by riding the hype of its theatrical release, however. The months following its record-breaking run in cinemas brought us a multitude of different versions - 3D, Extended Edition, Collectors Edition as well as a vanilla version devoid of any special features - that promoted double dipping, while the focus on the film's impressive special effects created added impetus for purchasing a HD version. As with its $2.79 billion box office you can question whether the movie by itself deserves this status (the truth sits somewhere between the opinions of the backlash bandwagon-riders and the die-hards who contemplated suicide over the film's beauty), but it's hard to quantify the film's reputation outside of those bizarre few months where Jake Soo-lee was the biggest name on the planet. Which of these Blu-Rays do you own? What were you surprised didn't make the list? And what 2014 releases are in with a chance of placing? Get down to the comments and have your say.
