20 Best Superhero Movies Since The Dark Knight

17. The Suicide Squad

Kick-Ass Captain America The Winter Soldier The Batman
Warner Bros.

After his much publicized firing from Marvel (they later rehired him, though), James Gunn was roped in by Warner Bros. to write and direct the sequel to that disastrous original film no-one wants to think about.

The results were, to put it mildly, spectacular.

The Suicide Squad is one of the most satisfying superhero movies in recent memory for two key reasons. Firstly, it trounces that dreadful first picture in literally every single way, and secondly, in a genre that does often get pretty samey, it's fantastic to see such a dizzyingly creative and out-there slice of madness on the big screen.

Unfortunately, it did bomb at the box office, but there's no doubt that this movie will have a long shelf life. Playing like a hilariously provocative comedy, a stomach-churning horror film and a stirring, exhilarating action war epic all at once, The Suicide Squad is one of the most unhinged, bonkers and inventive things in the history of the superhero film.

It's too long and not everyone will engage with its WTF-ness, but those who do get on-board with the insanity will be rewarded with a brilliantly acted, visually stunning and absurdly entertaining extravaganza that ultimately concludes with one of the most perfect third acts in any recent blockbuster. Truly, the last section of this movie is cinematic gold in every possible way.

If you're one of the many who passed on this one in cinemas, you need to watch it. Like, now!
