20 Best Survival Movies Of All Time

1. The Grey

The Grey Liam Neeson
Open Road Films

The Grey is an absolute masterpiece when it comes to creating tension and a dark, gloomy tone. Just think alive, but with less cannibals and more wolves.

The film came out in 2011, directed by Joe Carnahan and featuring a cast led by Liam Neeson, Frank Grillo, Dermot Mulroney and James Badge Dale. After a plane crash (standard), eight men must band together and fight off a pack of hungry wolves. They are injured, beaten and suffering the harsh conditions, but do all they can to push themselves to safety.

Thanks the unconventional mixture of typical survival situations and ravenous wolves, The Grey elevates itself from a mediocre drama to a compelling ans constantly intense thriller, full of great characters, dialogue, scenery and action. The emotional stakes are high, the acting is mature and controlled, and the direction is moody, promising big - and bad - things with every frame.

And who could forget that ending? This is a film full of dread and fear, and boy it is good.
