3. Rooney Mara
Best: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011) It might not outstrip the original, but David Fincher's intriguing take on Stieg Larsson's best-seller can count on a performance of total commitment by Rooney Mara, who is a revelation as Lisbeth Salander. She is a picture of damage, marked by aggression, visibly scarred and wounded and driven in an almost feral way that is simultaneously vulnerable and furious. The best of it is she didn't seek to directly compete with Noomi Rapace's original take, and instead offering a companion performance that is just as watchable and just as haunting. Worst: Pan (2015) If only it were possible to wash Mara's performance as Tiger Lily away as a distasteful product of the terrible decision to white wash the Peter Pan story: then it might be easier to accept how terrible she is in the role. Unfortunately though that's too much of an ask, as Mara takes her place alongside the rest of the cast who seem to have been pummelled into blandness and discomfort by Hugh Jackman's outrageous, wonderful performance as Blackbeard.
