20 Best & Worst Movies From 2016 Oscar Nominees

1. Leonardo DiCaprio

Best: The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013) Though The Revenant might well end up being the film that finally earns DiCaprio an Oscar and despite the well-publicised absurdities of his method, it's neither charming nor transformative enough to unseat his performances in either Django Unchained or The Wolf Of Wall Street as the actor's best. Perhaps because he's very obviously having a lot of fun in Scorsese's bonkers black comedy, DiCaprio feels more at ease, and he's always infinitely more watchable when there's a nasty element to his characters. And the fact that he actually manages to make Jordan Belfort sympathetic is an astonishing achievement. Worst: The Beach (2000) It may have its cult fans, and a certain specific appeal to the nomadic generation of hitch-hiking perpetual gap-year travellers, but The Beach is a sub-par Lord Of The Rings that singularly fails to get the best out of DiCaprio, who feels like he's wading through his cinematic puberty. It should have been more supernatural, more horrific and more strange, but DiCaprio feels out of place and undirected and as the plot escalates towards silliness, he gets progressively worse.
