20 Best & Worst Movies From 2017 Oscar Nominees

7. Natalie Portman

Emma Stone Finger
Buena Vista International

Best: Leon (1994)

This top performance could quite easily have gone to Black Swan on another day, but the context of Leon makes it all the more wonderful. She was brand new to acting, but stole the show as the precocious, wounded Mathilda alongside Jean Reno's stoic Leon, despite the distraction of Gary Oldman's more showy performance.

She is the emotional heart of the film, and sells everything from her naive flirtations to her stray backed into a corner vulnerability perfectly. And for posterity, just look at the exceptional audition that got her the role...

Worst: Thor: The Dark World (2013)

To give Portman her credit, she didn't have a lot of good material to work with in the Thor sequel, because Jane Foster has to go down as one of the most neglected characters in the entire MCU, but it didn't help matters that she basically slept through the second movie.

She's proven herself a gifted actor - and occasionally with less than ideal material - so she could arguably have done a lot better. Still, at least her line delivery was a little better than her "regal" voice in the Star Wars prequels.
