20 Best & Worst Movies From 2017 Oscar Nominees

8. Lucas Hedges

Best: Manchester By The Sea (2016)

Though Casey Affleck's performance is the more attention-grabbing in Manchester By The Sea, Hedges' emotional constant resonates beneath the more showy surface.

He is glorious as the troubled teenager robbed of his father with devastating brutality, taking on the difficult material with a cocktail of vulnerability and strong-headedness, and there's something completely captivating in the synchronicity between him and the shadow of his uncle's past. It's a career-making performance.

Worst: Arthur Newman (2013)

Despite boasting a cast including Colin Firth, Emily Blunt and a pre-fame Hedges, Arthur Newman is the sort of self-important, needlessly odd-ball dross that you'd expect from far lesser talent. And it's no wonder Hedges' troubled teenager Kevin struggles for any real impact as he drowns in an ocean of thoroughly unlikeable characters.
