20 Best & Worst Movies From 2017 Oscar Nominees

Best: The Big Lebowski (1998)

Though there is a real-life Dude, Jeff Bridge's transformative, cult-starting performance as Jeffrey Lebowski is as close to a definitive take as you're ever likely to see. Even lumbered with a ridiculous plot (admit it, I dare you), Bridges' complex, deeply unhinged hippy is effortlessly charming and infinitely cool. And it's what he will forever be remembered for. You could say it's a performance that abides.

Worst: King Kong (1977)

It might have been wiped out of the collective memory, but the first attempt to remake the 1933 classic monster movie was abysmal, despite a great cast, and it's not even like the starrier members of it emerged with any integrity intact.

Bridges starred as Jack Prescott, a primate paleontologist leading the expedition to Skull Island, and while he's shunted off screen when Kong appears, while he's on he's absolutely terrible. It's almost like the direction called for B-Movie acting to match the effects work.

His reaction shots to Kong's bloody end are not at all becoming of an actor of his standing...
