20 Best & Worst Movies From 2017 Oscar Nominees
12. Andrew Garfield
Best: Silence (2016)
Though his turn in Hacksaw Ridge is great, Garfield is helped massively by the buckets of melodrama of the story, and it's incredible anyone could really get past his accent to enjoy his performance enough to nominate him. And oddly, he was a whole world better in Martin Scorsese's Silence.
His performance her is one marked by conflict, internal and ideological, and you can almost see the battle of piety and passionate rage that bubbles inside him. Even as the film sags in places, or the stunning visuals threaten to distract from the performances, Watson is completely captivating, and it's a shame he wasn't double nominated.
Worst: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Unfortunately for Garfield, the sequel to Marc Webb's not-at-all-terrible reboot struggled with the same demons that killed Sam Raimi's Spidey franchise and fatally couldn't rely on a great central performance to transcend them. He struggles to overcome the contrivances, and even his chemistry with Emma Stone feels a little forced.
It's no real wonder they didn't call him back.
