20 Best & Worst Movies From 2018 Oscar Nominees
7. Saoirse Ronan
Best: Brooklyn (2015)
Brooklyn is still a stunning film 3 years on from its Oscar praise (3 nominations, no wins) and it's easily one of the most rewarding rewatchable films made this decade. And very much key to its success is Saoirse Ronan's central performance, which remains her best despite a strong challenge from Lady Bird.
She is a woman in transition, drinking in her new life as her old one pulls her back irresistibly and Ronan brings an intimacy to it that is simply incredible. She's so charming, in fact, that we can forgive the fact that she embarks on a love triangle that ends up devastating the audience.
Worst: The Host (2013)
The Host was billed as the new Twilight, which is definitely what the marketing was aimed squarely at convincing before it came out. It was eve written by the same person, so it'd definitely be as good, right?
Wrong. The film is a bloated, boring mess and a horrible misstep for Ronan. She's at her best in thoughtful roles with intelligent material, and this fit neither of those boxes.
