Best: The Fall Of The Roman Empire (1964)

Plummer's gloriously camp, genuinely terrifying Commodus is one of the greatest cinematic villains of the 1960s - an era so distant now that it's unforgivably forgotten when most people talk about their favourite films. Considering this was almost his first ever performance on screen (after more than a decade on stage), it's even more impressive.

He brings a theatricality learned on the boards to his flamboyant villain and is the crowning element in a gorgeous period epic. And while Joaquin Phoenix played the same character memorably in Gladiator, Plummer's is by far the superior performance.

Worst: Dracula 2000 (2000)

Fighting hard for the title of most needlessly modernised horror movie ever, Dracula 2000 is also one of the most mediocre additions to the genre from a period when it was struggling badly for relevance. It's incredible Gerard Butler managed to make it out of this mess with a career still on an upward trajectory.

Sadly for Christopher Plummer, who plays Van Helsing, this is not his movie and while he's passable as the legendary figure, he sticks out because of the terribleness around him. But at least he makes you wish they'd gone with something more traditional based around his character.
