20 Best & Worst Movies From 2018 Oscar Nominees
3. Meryl Streep
Best: Doubt (2008)
Meryl Streep picks up Oscar nominations as feverishly as she picks up great roles (with a few damp squibs now and then), so picking a winner is a difficult prospect. But even with a lot of great options - like The Devil Wears Prada and Sophie' Choice - Doubt definitely stands out as the winner.
In it, Streep's character is presented as a complex, unsympathetic busy-body, who is pushed onwards by the abuse hidden in the church who wrestles with her faith and her doubt. And that struggle is what makes her performance so stunning to watch even as the film dips in interest.
Worst: Mamma Mia (2008)
Mamma Mia might be a cultural phenomenon and beloved by lots of people, but it is not good. It is entertaining and occasionally joyous, but it is not good. There is nothing about it, other than how it makes you feel that is good, which means it's hard to criticise.
But in purely traditional terms, it is Streep's weakest film. She's not great in it, and it's mostly because she's asked to sing and cannot really do it. It's not her fault, of course, as that's not what you hire Streep for, but it still goes down as a blip.
