20 Best & Worst Movies From 2019 Oscar Nominees

Best: Withnail & I (1987)

In the great pantheon of British acting performances, Richard E Grant's towering Withnail will forever be immortalised as one of the most profoundly inspired. In his hands, the failed, booze-soaked actor is an instant archetype: he is now forever the benchmark both for eccentrics, failed actors and lushes.

Like an ageing gunslinger outdated by the new laws of the Old West, Grant's Withnail is the personification of the dregs of the hippie era and pretty much everything he says is utterly enthralling. Only part of that comes down to the writing - there's way more to be said of the way Grant delivers.

Worst: Spice World (1998)

Grant has some absolute stinkers on his CV, including several 0%ers on Rotten Tomatoes but nothing will ever beat the travesty of the Spice Girls movie Spice World. A vanity project made by the behemoth girl group (who never paused to wonder whether they should be able to act and couldn't even manage to play THEMSELVES convincingly), it is deplorable. Withnail would have turned it down, even at his most desperate.
