20 Biggest Movies Of 2015: What Do We Already Know?
7. Tomorrowland
Who's involved? Disney will undoubtedly be the studio to beat come 2015, even with Pirates of the Caribbean 5 pushed back to 2016, with this one of their most original and secretive projects. Directed by Pixar genius Brad Bird, who has written the script with Damon Lindelof (Lost, Star Trek), Tomorrowland is named after the retro-futuristic zone of Disneyland after being known for a long time simply as 1952. George Clooney is attached to star alongside Hugh Laurie - putting his blues piano aside for his first major role since the end of House - and Britt Robertson (Under the Dome). What's the story? For a long time we were left with just a title and some cryptic images relating to mid 20th century science, technology and pulp sci-fi. There was even speculation that the project was related to Disney's new Star Wars film. Last month, though, the studio released an actual synopsis, although it remains pretty vague. What we do now know is that it focuses on the relationship between Frank (Clooney), a former boy genius turned disillusioned inventor, and Casey (Robertson), an optimistic teen science enthusiast, and their adventure in a mysterious place "somewhere in time and space known only as Tomorrowland." Bird showed a knack for retro-style sci-fi thrills with a genuine universal appeal in The Iron Giant and The Incredibles. If Tomorrowland can translate that to live action then it will be one of the best films of 2015.
6. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2
Who's involved? By the final part of this massive hit series most of the players are already in place. Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence has signed up for the final two parts of the Suzanne Collins adaptation, this time written by Danny Strong (Buffy's Jonathan and writer of The Butler). Star Jennifer Lawrence (no relation) will obviously return, along with Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and the rest of the gang. The late Philip Seymour Hoffman, however, died with his scenes yet to be completed. How Lawrence and company deal with Hoffman's absence remains to be seen, though it's been suggested that CGI will be used. Additions to the cast for the two part finale include Julianne Moore and Game of Thrones' Natalie Dormer. What's the story? Mockingjay, the final Hunger Games novel, is being split into two films a la the final parts of Harry Potter and Twilight, so as yet there's no way of knowing how much of the novel's story will appear in the first part, released this November, and how much in the finale, released November 2015. What we do know is that Katniss will have to deal with becoming the poster girl for the blossoming revolution and finding herself in the previously thought destroyed District 13 with its own president (Moore). Will she end up with bland plank Gale (Hemsworth) or manipulative creep Peeta (Hutcherson)? You'll find out in 2015. Or you could always just read the book.
