20 Biggest Summer Box Office Bombs Of All Time

18. Stealth

Summer Blockbuster Flops
Columbia Pictures

Budget: $135 million (marketing costs unknown)

Box office: $76.9 million

Loss: $58.1 million

Stealth by name, stealthy by nature, the 2005 action film arrived in cinemas and slipped away again in an impressively covert manner. Your average moviegoer probably hasn’t even heard of Stealth, and the ones who have more than likely caught wind of it precisely because of its failure at the box office.

In case you haven’t seen it – pretty likely, let's face it – Stealth features Jamie Foxx, Jessica Biel and Josh Lucas as a team of fighter pilots recruited to tackle terrorist threats and whose fourth member ‘EDI’ is effectively a drone equipped with artificial intelligence. When EDI develops a touch of the HALs and goes rogue after getting struck by lightning (no, seriously), the team takes to the skies to stop their erstwhile colleague from starting World War III.

With a gargantuan price tag of $135 million, Stealth always faced an uphill struggle to turn much of a profit. There’s scant information available as regards marketing costs, but it’s safe to say Stealth lost a good deal more than the figure listed above and comfortably earns its place in this Hall of Shame.

I watch movies and I watch sport. I also watch movies about sport, and if there were a sport about movies I'd watch that too. The internet was the closest thing I could find.
