An epic adventure tale, source material that’s entertained countless generations, a whopping budget to bring it all to life – what could go wrong?
Well, quite a bit if you decide to adapt a nineteenth-century novel, alter the plot to the point where it bears no more than a passing resemblance to the Jules Verne novel of the same name, populate it with, for the most part, virtual unknowns and enlist Adam Sandler’s pet director to oversee matters.
Frank Coraci’s 2004 tale of Phileas Fogg (Steve Coogan), valet Lau Xing (Jackie Chan – ostensibly the film’s lead because… never mind) and their attempts to circumnavigate the globe might actually be one of the better films on this list, but that’s a backhanded compliment if ever there was one.
Around The World In 80 Days is only really known for two things: it was one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s last appearances before the Governator stormed California; and it lost a lot of dough – enough to make it one of the least successful summer blockbusters in recent memory.
