In The Book

The backstory of Neville's parents is particularly tragic, establishing why he has to live with his grandmother and why he is as purely good and as heroic as he becomes over the course of the books. They were both sent insane after being tortured, and live in St Mungo's Hospital For Magical Maladies And Injuries, where Harry, Ron and Hermione see them while visiting Mr Weasley after he is attacked at the Ministry.

In an extremely touching scene, Neville's mother gives him an empty Droobles Blowing Gum wrapper, which his grandmother wanted him to throw it away, but which he kept as a token.

In The Film

The hospital never appears and all we see of Neville's parents is a photo of them with the first Order Of The Phoenix before they are sent mad. Neville's family history is revealed, but we never get to see this little moment.

Was It A Positive Cut?

It should have been included for the exchange between Neville and his mother alone. He is one of the real heroes of the film because of where he came from, and unlike Harry he has to relive his parents' suffering every time he sees them. That's arguably even worse, and makes his resilience all the more notable.
