19. Hawkeye...Has A Secret Family? - Avengers: Age Of Ultron
Mid-way through Age of Ultron, we learn that Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in fact has a secret family, a wife named Laura (Linda Cardellini), two children and a third on the way. It's quite the shock to both the other Avengers, who use their family home as a safe house, and the audience, who simply assumed he didn't have a personal life to speak of. Laura is naturally averse to Hawkeye being an Avenger, and as the fight against Ultron is built up to be his "one last mission", Joss Whedon makes the viewer expect him to die, only for it to be subverted in glorious fashion as Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) saves him from Ultron's gunfire. He then returns home at the end of the movie, effectively "retiring" from the group to care for his baby son, who they name Pietro in honour of Quicksilver. He'll be back in the upcoming Civil War, though, so his period of peace was very short-lived. Though we're glad Whedon gave Hawkeye more to do this time around, couldn't it have been more about a**-kicking rather than a fairly by-the-numbers family melodrama?
