20 Black Movie Characters Hollywood Should Learn From

10. Childs (The Thing)

Childs has a strong, interesting voice (no pun intended)€”brought to life in this case by the immortal Keith David€”and contributes superbly to the movie€™s theme of mistrust. The entire movie is about trying to figure out who is the alien Thing at any given moment, and Childs is increasingly shown in a growing ambiguous light as the movie goes on, even more so than the other characters, culminating in one of the most heavily debated and analyzed endings ever put on film. He emphatically and matter-of-factly resists all accusations against him to the end, even when all the evidence seems to be against him, and on at least a few occasions, he actually proves the others wrong€”not through his own defense mind you, but because other factors reveal circumstances to be otherwise to the extent that the others can€™t deny. He€™s a real (hopefully!) and telling character. Like such horror movies as Night of the Living Dead that make things more interesting through the characters, his presence really contributes to bringing out the problems in the movie and making things more interesting to experience, tantalizingly keeping you at the edge of your seat while helping you to think about larger ideas at the same time. If executives are still wondering why all of these horror reboots aren€™t doing well, they should pay attention to the characters from the original films, what they meant to the stories, and which actors were allowed to play them.
