20 Black Movie Characters Hollywood Should Learn From

9. Lando Calrissian (The Empire Strikes Back, Return Of The Jedi)

Lando Calrissian is another great character who shows how much an actor of any race can do in any genre without having to fit into a certain niche. He is very interesting to watch€”he is charming, funny, moving, and absolutely serious. He holds his own with Han Solo and Boba Fett, believably charms Princess Leia, is at home with Chewbacca and C-3PO, and powerfully emotes the subdued, thick dread of being around Darth Vader. He is an eloquent leader administratively and militarily who has to deal with some of the most conflicting feelings of anyone in Star Wars who isn€™t a Jedi. All in two Star Wars movies (mainly Empire of course). The character brings a great presence to the Star Wars universe. Billy Dee Williams embodies that presence perfectly, and also arguably pushes it further than it was on the page. If Hollywood were to make a Lando spin-off, people would see it (I know I would), but more importantly, Lando is a reminder that the only reason there isn€™t more racial variety in mainstream movies is because the Hollywood powers that be want it that way. It€™s a good thing The Empire Strikes Back wasn€™t released before 1980; otherwise Billy Dee Williams may not have been considered for the part. Thankfully, the right man got the job.
